| This was the perfect wall to paint with students. The wall height was never higher than 5'. Working outdoors with students, the number of participants at one time is less than a standard class size, yet the involvement is greater. We had a core group of students that helped each afternoon--their involvement in the project was exceptional. I also enjoyed the student's designs that developed into their own personal symbolism. This type of project, is of course, weather permitting. This is a custom project developed around the scale of the mural and the number of participants. |

Description: 81st Street school children designed patterns and worked with Adinkra symbols for their patchwork mural. The Heart, 'Axoma' is a symbol of patience and tolerance. |

Description: This Adinkra symbol means 'I change or transform my life'--'Sesa Woruban'. It is the morning star inside the wheel which represents movement. |

Description: This symbol was a student's personal design using an Adinkra symbol as only a starting point. The center feels a bit like the symbol of love and safety and yet like a star. |

Description: This Adinkra symbol represents the importance of the Earth in sustaining life. |
Friendship and Interdependence
Description: The literal description: the teeth and the tongue play interdependent roles in the mouth. They may come into conflict, but they need to work together. |

Knot of Reconciliation
Description: This knot is found in several cultures. The Adinkra symbol, 'Mpatapo' represents the bond or knot that binds parties in a dispute and it is this know that also lends to a peaceful and harmonious reconciliation. |
Protect
Description: The symbol on the right is derived from the leg of a hen meaning protectiveness, mercy and correction. |
Students
Description: The students worked hard and enjoyed working with symbols, beautifying their school and helping out the younger students. |
